About Lübeck

(Excerpt from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luebeck)

Lübeck is the second largest city in Schleswig-Holstein, in northern Germany, and one of the major ports of Germany. It was for several centuries the "capital" of the Hanseatic League ("Queen of the Hanse") and because of its Brick Gothic architectural heritage is on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. In 2005 it has a population of 213,983.

Situated at the Trave River, Lübeck is the largest German port on the Baltic Sea. The old part of the town is an island enclosed by the Trave. The Elbe-Lübeck Canal connects the Trave with the Elbe River. Another important river near the town center is the Wakenitz. Autobahn 1 connects Lübeck with Hamburg and Denmark (Vogelfluglinie). The borough Travemünde is a sea resort and ferry port at the coast of the Baltic Sea.

Lübeck is very famous for its excellent marzipan industry, and according to local legend, Marzipan was first made in Lübeck possibly in response to either a military siege of the city, or a famine year. The story, perhaps apocryphal, is that the town ran out of all foods except stored almonds and sugar, and used these to make loaves of marzipan "bread". Others believe that marzipan was actually invented in Persia a few hundred years before Lübeck claims to have invented it. The best known producer is Niederegger, which tourists often visit while in Lübeck, especially during Christmas time.

One Lübeck specialty is Rotspon, wine made from grapes processed and fermented in France and transported in wooden barrels to Lübeck, where it is stored, aged and bottled.

How to get to Lübeck

The best way to travel to Lübeck is usually through Hamburg Airport and then take the train to Lübeck. Some of you might be lucky and find a Ryanair flight into Lübeck directly

By car

Take the A1 to Lübeck and take the exit at “Lübeck-Zentrum”.

By train

Take a train to “Luebeck” to get to the main station. Timetable information is available at http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/. From the main station, proceed to the bus terminals (called ZOB) and take a local bus to your hotel. Timetable information is available at http://scout.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en. Enter “ZOB, Luebeck” in the “From:” field and for the “To:” field, have a look at the information for your hotel.

By plane

Two airports are available near Lübeck: Hamburg Airport (most major airlines) and Lübeck Airport Lübeck (mostly serving Ryanair flights).

Arriving at Hamburg Airport (HAM, http://www.airport.de/index_en.phtml), there is an airport shuttle called TRAVELiner (http://www.traveliner.de/), that offers a direct connection from Hamburg airport (Terminal 1) to Lübeck’s bus terminal near the main station (called ZOB). The timetable is available at http://www.traveliner.de/docs/Flyer2010_2.pdf

From the main station, proceed to the bus terminals (called ZOB) and take a local bus to you hotel. Timetable information is available at http://scout.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en. Enter “ZOB, Luebeck” in the “From:” field and for the “To:” field, have a look at the information for your hotel.

Arriving at Lübeck Airport, take the bus No. 6 local bus to the Lübeck city centre.

How to get to the meeting place

The meeting place is located in the "Herrenhaus" located at campus Lübeck. Take the bus line 4 or 6 from the city centre to "Groß Grönau" or "Blankensee". Do not leave the bus at the bus stop "Universität" - the next bus stop is closer to the meeting place it is called "Grönauer Baum. From the city centre to the university you need a ticket for zone 2 (2,20€).

Here you find the way points in google maps

The address of the Herrenhaus is Peter-Monnik-Weg 9 (University building 82), just behind a small pond
